In the Potter's Hands
Jeremiah received the Lord’s word: Go down to the potter’s house, and I’ll give you instructions about what to do there. So I went down to the potter’s house; he was working on the potter’s wheel. But the piece he was making was flawed while still in his hands, so the potter started on another, as seemed best to him. Then the Lord’s word came to me: House of Israel, can’t I deal with you like this potter, declares the Lord? Like clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in mine, house of Israel!
Jeremiah 18:1-6 CEB
The good news is
this: We are in God’s hands.
We may be cracked,
flawed, weak, unprepared, seemingly unusable, unstable or even outright broken,
yet we are still in God’s hands. I don’t know about you, but I am clinging to
that good news with all my heart, mind and spirit!!
Pulling down statues
does not change history. Changing your heart and being molded by the Potter
transforms the present and the future.
Covid-19 exploits
our weaknesses, even unto death. Trusting our every breath and behavior to the
Potter celebrates the Potter’s vision of our potential, even unto Life beyond
death.
Anybody can burn
down buildings and destroy property. Only the Potter can shape a future from
nothing and give Hope in the midst of despair.
Injustice holds the
oppressed down and dallies upon the necks of the poor. Equity is given life as
the fingers of the Potter reshapes Hope and renames Purpose in each one.
The good news of the
present moment is this: We are in God’s hands. Like clay, we can be shaped anew
by the Potter.
Do you believe it? I
do.
So, I choose to
spend more time building faith for the future, than tearing down relics of the
past.
I choose to invest
more of my spirit creating a trusting and equitable community with all people,
than telling others the mistakes they have made.
I choose to focus my
time and energy in lending a hand to another in their pursuit of dreams, rather
than blithely sitting on the sidelines sniping at their direction.
I choose to follow
Jesus, the Christ, the Son of God.
I choose to trust
the Spirit, the Counselor, the Holy Advocate.
I choose to be clay
in the hands of God . . . mostly because God has chosen to hold me – and that
is just enough.
Looking forward to
seeing you, truly seeing you, back in worship, service and mission in the days
ahead. I pray that, as you are able, you will choose to be there, too.
The Potter’s
Blessings be with you!
